I love birthday parties! I love planning them and doing all of the setup, but it can get expensive really fast. It is hard for me to justify spending $100 on decorations that are only going to be used once, on top of presents and food.To save a nickel or two, I decided to make this Birthday Edition of "Family on a Budget". Below is an Agrabah themed birthday for a one-year-old that is tons of fun and doesn't break the bank.
The Food
Take Ferrero Rocher candies and carefully remove the brown paper wrapper but leave the gold foil covering the chocolate. I put them in a clear glass jar I found at Dollar Tree that had gold around the top rim.
Take Rock Candies and put them in another of those clear glass jars linked above.
To keep the rock candies in place, the bottom of the jar is filled with Deep Sea Blue Glass Gems.
They're not muffins, but the name was too cute to pass up. The lamps I made out of construction paper, gold glitter nail polish, and skewers. The gold platter was Dollar Tree.
I'm not a baker, so I got store-bought cupcake mix, frosting, and sprinkles. I put the cupcake liners on before frosting them using a piping bag.
The candle and platter were from Dollar Tree. And I used another store-bought cake mix and frostings. If you can't find the right frosting color then get a cream cheese one and just whip in some food dye. Speaking of which; I added a couple of drops of red food dye to the white cake mix to make it bright pink.
Using the Dollar Store primarily, the total for all of the food and food-related decor was only $31!
The Decor
The color scheme was gold, deep blue, purple, and pink. Basically the same colors as the new Disney Aladdin movie.
I was able to find 10 of these sequin pillows in all those colors at Dollar Tree! Lucky me!
For the bouquet, I got three sets of flowers, a vase, gem ribbon, and gem stickers.
I would suggest hot gluing the ribbon and gems on so that they stay on better.
These two frames with glitter inside were also the Dollar Tree. Although you can make your own with custom phrases by using deep set picture frames, printing the phrases on cardstock.
I found these mirrors and candles at Dollar Tree as well. I got six mirrors, three tall candles, and two packs of 2 tea lights.
Also, I got a table cloth and table runner for just $5!!
Again, from mostly the Dollar Tree, the total for all of this decor was only $34!
Costumes
What is a princess party without tiaras? Never underestimate the power of a hot glue gun and some cardboard. I traced out the tiara shape on the side of a diaper box, then glued yellow construction paper onto it. Next, I painted that with the gold glitter nail polish, the same one I used for the cupcake lamps. I find that that works better than glitter glue, which can clump up. After the polish dried, it was all a matter of gluing on the leftover jewels from the vase I decorated earlier.
I then used metallic duct tape to attach it to a headband I already had. I only ended up spending $1 on the tape, since the rest of the supplies I already had.
Conclusion
Because this was a party for a one-year-old, I didn't plan any big activities, which helped me save even more. A penny pincher until the last, and darn proud of it. So in total, I spent $66 for an Agrabah-themed birthday party!
