How to Cut Hair at Home - The Haircut Box, Product Review

You're going to think this photo was staged. That's an actual photo of my bedroom dresser! Amongst the chaos, the items that we use most come to live there. And that includes The Haircut Box! In the two months we've owned the kit, I've used it at least five times. A wonderful product, with a great way to gain confidence in your haircutting skills, and save your family some money!

The Investment

The price of The Haircut Box was the biggest hurdle for me. As a budget shopper, and someone that was an avid Great Clips user, it scared me. But doing some quick math, if I could learn how to give my son and husband a quick trim at home instead of taking them to a salon, even for a budget haircut, the kit would pay for itself in about 12 haircuts!

My husband and his brother would swap giving haircuts with the "buzzers" in college, and when we got married, it became my job. Those haircut styles lasted through graduate school, and then we added my son into the lineup. That was until two years ago, when those haircuts weren't fancy enough anymore. My son has straight, soft hair, and he likes to wear it longer. My husband wanted a more professional look that didn't make his hair so fuzzy. So their haircuts began to cost more than just time.

But now with The Haircut Box, we're back to saving that salon spending just for me!

What I Purchased

Even with this being a product review, I paid for everything myself! These are the goodies we got:

  • Boy Starter Pack: Includes scissors, texturing shears, cape, wide tooth cutting comb, continuous spray bottle, instruction cards, treats for your "clients" (ours were Dum-Dum Pops)
  • Girl Instructions: You can get printed versions, or a digital copy (which is $10 less expensive)
  • Hard Case: The starter pack comes with a mesh cinch bag to hold supplies, this case was just more durable and could hold our hair clippers too
  • Neck Brush: Because I felt like being a little fancy
  • Tail Combs: Not necessary, because the cutting comb from the Starter Pack works just fine
  • Web (Hair Styling Gel): Brandon hasn't found a hair gel he loves yet, so we are experimenting

We already owned hair clippers, a.k.a. "buzzers," which we got as a wedding present, so I didn't have to buy those again. But the Baller Boy Box includes those as well!

Is It Worth It?

Absolutely, this is a great product to help your household, and to help you learn another skill. Am I a professional? No way, and I don't think I ever will hit that status. But the instructions and the correct products have been so helpful to my confidence and technique. I understood the idea of haircutting, and could figure it out, but the step-by-step instructions really has helped me feel ready.

When I'm concerned with how it's looking, I look through and find a solution instead of guessing! And if their hair looks a little funky after the cut is done, I can pull out the scissors again to adjust the look.

The One Complaint

My only frustration is that the haircuts included in the step-by-step instructions are more trendy, specifically for the boys. More of the shaved-sides and mohawk-type of looks. While my daughter wanted a shaved-side and a blunt bob for her first haircut by mom, the boys of the family aren't as adventurous. I've just had to read through the instructions and apply the practices to these different hairstyle ideas. Things like using higher guards on the clippers, so the hair stays longer. Or using my fingers as an extra spacer when cutting with the scissors.

Also, follow Ashlie on Instagram to learn even more tips and tricks. For example, I learned that when cutting a straight bob, you should have them tilt their chin down... I didn't, and now my daughter's hair is a little wonky in the back. But, she's only nine-years-old and doesn't really care. But I'll be sure to trim it up before we take family photos this summer.
