Themed family Halloween costumes is one of the best things of the fall season! Since we've been married, we've dressed as X-Men, Calvin and Hobbes, Pokemon, Moana, Trolls, Spiderman, Ninja Turtles... I thought last year might be our final year, but the kids pushed the theme this year, so we've been prepping as Princess Mononoke characters! Here's my process on how we plan and put together our costumes!
Step 1: Theme
My kids make suggestions the whole year, but we start seriously thinking about the theme in August. What shows are your kids into? Who are their favorite characters? Do you have a childhood movie you want to share with your kids? Come up with a few ideas and see which one gets most of the family members excited! It's more fun when more people are involved!
Step 2: Gameplan Sketch
Here's where we start planning what each costume needs! Write down each person's character, and do a quick sketch on what pieces create that character. Do they have special colors they wear? Do they have a certain weapon? Hair color or facial hair? What features remind you of that character?
It also creates a great shopping list, so you know what you have and what you still need! Make your sketches on half sheets of paper, with one character per half sheet. Label each costume item with color, size, style, anything that you need to remember to get just the right item.
Step 3: Go Shopping
Shop Your House
Do you already own any of the items on the character shopping list?
